Journal History

Virtual Archaeology Review (VAR) is the first biannual scientific, international journal specifically devoted to the field of virtual archaeology. The journal is meant for archaeologists, information scientists, engineers, historians, restorers, architects and professionals linked with the use of new technologies in the field of archaeological heritage research.

VAR targets the publication of original papers, interdisciplinary surveys, and essays on this young discipline, which is continuously evolving and currently on its way to scientific consolidation.

VAR was established in 2010, under the directors Mr. Alfredo Grande León and Dr. Víctor Manuel López-Menchero Bendicho, linked to the ARQUEOLÓGICA 2.0 -International Congress on Graphic Archaeology and Informatics, Heritage and Innovation- congress from the beginning, in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Virtual Archaeology (SEAV).

In July 2015, VAR changed its editorial team and policy, being Prof. Dr. José Luis Lerma the Editor-in-Chief. It is now published by the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) Publisher in collaboration with SEAV from volume 7, number 14. The biannual publication is kept since the beginning, except in 2012, when a special issue about Virtual Museums was launched. The frequency of publication has been May and November since 2012; and May and July in 2017. From 2018 onwards, VAR will be biannually issued, in January and July.

In January 2020, VAR has reshuffled its Editorial Team to adapt it to the changing scientific-technical scenario related to the world of conservation, documentation and information and communication technologies. VAR continues to be at the service of quality research, innovation, and dissemination of archaeology and cultural heritage.

VAR has changed its policy on Article Processing Charges (APCs). Since June 2022, APC might be applied to the authors depending on their research4life status and research financing.
